Discover Primary Science and Maths (DPS&M) is an initiative of Discover Science and Engineering. It supports primary science in schools throughout the DPS&M Activity pack, the DPS&M website www.primaryscience.ie , accredited Discover Science Centres and the Awards of Science and Maths Excellence.
Just over 3,100 primary schools and their teachers are currently participating in discover science and maths activities which include hands-on induction days which are hosted throughout the country in colleges of education, institutes of technology, universities and education centres.
Hands-on training sessions are provided for all teachers participating in this initiative, while a range of resources are then supplied to participating classes. These include a pack of easy-to-follow science activities, helpful hints for teachers, explanations of the science and maths background for each activity, and how they relate to the SESE curriculum.
For those who excel in their levels of participation in Discover Primary Science, Awards of Science and Maths Excellence have been introduced, which recipient schools can publicly display as a mark of their achievement. Primary schools can then build on this achievement from year to year.
Eligibility to apply for an Award of Science and Maths Excellence is based on meeting criteria by participating in a range of science and maths activities, both prescribed and explorative.
A nationwide network of Discover Science Centres was established in 2005. Lifetime Lab is proud to be one of the first accredited centres in Ireland. Classes participating in Discover Primary Science and Maths may use a workshop or tour visit to Lifetime Lab to fulfill Step 3 of the steps required to achieve a DPS+M Award of Science and Maths Excellence.
