The sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels are sources of energy which are renewable and so will never be exhausted. The main sources of renewable energy are the sun (passive solar, solar water heating, solar photovoltaic), the wind, moving water (hydropower, wave and tidal energy), geothermal energy and biomass (wood, waste, energy crops).
The use of renewable sources of energy helps us to reduce the production of harmful greenhouse gases and also reduces our need for costly imported fossil fuels.
Several renewable energy technologies are now becoming more common in Ireland and they can supply ‘cleaner and greener’ heat and power. When building new buildings or renovating older buildings, we should think about using renewable energy to supply hot water, heating and electricity.
