An incinerator is a facility dedicated to the thermal treatment of waste. Incineration reduces the volume of waste prior to final disposal and it also stabilises and sanitises waste. Any energy generated from this process can be used to produce heat or electricity.
Incineration should be one part of an overall integrated waste management strategy designed to minimise waste production, maximise recycling, recover energy from waste that cannot be recycled and keep landfill to a minimum. This integrated system will ensure that the waste that we all produce in Ireland has the least possible impact on our environment.
