Recycling schemes in Cork City

Recycling Schemes in Cork City

Like many other Local Authorities, Cork City Council operates a number of recycling initiatives in order to maximise the level of recycling waste in Cork City.

Cork City Council currently provides 37 bring sites throughout Cork city where glass is accepted free of charge from householders for recycling.

The City Council also operates a Civic Amenity site at the Kinsale Road Landfill site for the collection of recyclable materials from householders. The materials are accepted free of charge for recycling at the Kinsale Road Landfill Site. Cork City Council is currently planning the construction of a second Civic Amenity Site on the north side of Cork city.

Cork City Council, in partnership with a private company, CTO Environmental Solutions Ltd., operates two recycling initiatives at the Kinsale Road Civic Amenity Site. These are the timber waste recycling initiative where timber waste is accepted from the domestic and commercial sectors for recycling, and the green waste project where garden waste is accepted from horticultural contractors and the domestic sector for composting.

In 2004, Cork City Council introduced a 'kerbside' collection scheme to its domestic customers. The door-to-door scheme collects a range of dry recyclable materials including:

  • Clean mixed paper, newspapers, magazines and brochures.
  • Clean cardboard
  • Washed drink cans (Aluminium)
  • Washed food cans (Steel)
  • Washed tetrapacks (Juice and milk cartons)
  • Washed plastic bottles / containers

The recyclable materials are taken to a central location where they are separated and compacted prior to transportation to a recycling facility.
