Water pollution can be prevented by understanding the sources and types of pollutants that exist. Pollution can come from chemcials which are washed from farm fields into streams, rivers and lakes. Types include excess artificial fertilisers (i.e. nitrates and phosphates) and slurry and sprays (weedkillers, insectkillers).
Pollution may also arise from chemicals that are washed into water sources from septic tanks, soakways, spillages and industrial processes. These include sewage, residues from washing powders, cleaning agents, paints, thinners, varnishes etc.
