Waste water material is normally sent for treatment before discharge into rivers, seas, lakes etc. Waste water and sewage is collected in sewers which are connected to dwellings, factories etc and the materials usually flow by gravity to a treatment plant which is located at the lowest point in the area.
Here the solids and the liquids are separated and treated in different processes. The treated solids are called sludges and some sludges can be dried to produce pellets which can be used as an agricultural / gardening fertiliser.
Sludges may contain large quantities of water and once the pathogens and heavy metals are removed, these sludges can be spread on forest lands and agricultural lands to fertilise soils. The spreading of these sludges is carried out in a very controlled manner to ensure no environmental pollution takes place.
